Salangen biennale 2021

Thanks

First and foremost: Thanks to artists from near and far, who took part in this spontaneous initiative and showed works and great effort to allow contemporary art to be experienced in the district.

The Salangen Biennale is proud and grateful to have been supported by KORO and Salangen Municipality. Furthermore, we sincerely thank you for the natural resources, which Salaks and Extra Sjøvegan supported us with. Many thanks to the local business community, who helped us in the form of great offers on services and goods, which were necessary for the completion of the works, infrastructure and the whole adventure. The welding class at the vocational school in Sjøvegan has made a huge effort to create parts for works for individual artists. We are incredibly moved and happy about the volunteer effort, which was spontaneously put into this project. Thanks to the participating artists and support crew for pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

From the first moment, the Salangen biennale was received with enthusiasm by those involved and external. And from the first moment the spontaneous project grew bigger and bigger. The response to the entire exhibition was incredibly positive and we were asked by several institutions and people to leave the works on display for longer. In some of the exhibition areas, which are also well-known tourist destinations, parts of the exhibition therefore, with the consent of the artists involved, stayed several months longer than planned.

Thank you to the audience, for fighting through rain and mud, through the forest and on the mountain, for being challenged and inspired by contemporary art.

Storhaugen (665m)

At Storhaugen, works remained standing for longer than originally planned. The first trip to the mountain, with the artists Marita Isobel Solberg, June Mong to install works was in May 2021. We got help from two local acquaintances with snowmobiles and donning, June transported her works by dog sled. For parts of the stretch, people had to walk and luggage had to be carried, since the road was really bad, and the snow couldn't carry us all the way. Nevertheless, we got all the tools, equipment, the artists and the organizers. Marita carried out a singing performance and painted the ancient futhark runic alphabet on 24 wooden discs. June installed her wooden sculptures in a stone pile. The metal stands for the work Kokkene i Lovkoshókka from Karin Aurora Lindell were transported up and installed in May. The artist installed the work in June 2021.

Vinkelstasjonen (450 moh)

Utstilling varte 11. - 13. Juni 2021. Kunstutstillingen ble supplert med historisk vandring.

Kraftsentralen (2 moh)

Kraftsentralen, som utstillingsområde, ble til en installasjon. På forskjellige tidspunkt gjennom utstillingshelgen 11. - 13.

Structure in the shore (-1 m above sea level)

The foundations of the old cable car, which was the connection between Storhaugen and the lower part of the Salangsverket's buildings, are scattered in the forest, on fields and one of them in the sea, next to the road, which leads to the Salangsverket industrial area. Here the plan was to show a series of photographs by Delphine Besse, who unfortunately did not arrive in Salangen in time.
